Ralph Hotere
I really connect with the tendancy for some New Zealand artists to use text in their work. It makes sense to me. In Maori culture visual symbolism plays a big part and to me modern text is an extention of this. Words immediately have visual references and they often show a picture with more detail than their literal meanings.
I love the colour pallete used in this work by Ralph Hotere (or lack of it)
again it reminds me of Maori and the natural tones they often worked with. It is a straight to the point pallete that holds no distractions.
'There are few things I can say about my work that are better than saying nothing.'

Check it out! Beautiful work by Karina Armstrong of Applestick Contemporary Art. Karinas show is on now in Balnnaring but unfortunately there are only a few works left. A near sell out show. Congratulations Karina. Congratulations also to the lucky few who secure the final paintings.

'Tracey Tawhiao'

I am in love with traceys work at the moment. I feel a real cultural connection. She has several images floating around the Internet of her work hung in her own home. These images
take me back into my grandmothers living room as a kid growing up in the south island of New Zealand. Now this is curious as my memory of my grandmother is limited. Tracey's work, I think, gives me more of a sense of things than an actual reality.

signature 2010

An element of my work looks at human signatures. I see the hair in my hair drawings as a sample of me, a signature. The above work looks at another kind of signature but both are related, both hair and signing a persons name say "I was present, I am here"

BALANCE
Is it just me or does everyone at some stage or another feel like they are truly losing control of their mind? Not only do I feel this way occasionally but I find myself unwillingly facilitating, almost encouraging, this state of being and it is almost out of my control. I know the feeling and can see it happening but I am without the power to do anything about it. I am a spectator. The only thing i find comforting at these times is the knowledge it will pass, balance will return, and that i can see it for what it is, temporary.

'Dana Dart-McLean'
Check out this interview on one of my favourite sites to visit. http://www.fecalface.com/SF/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1828&Itemid=92
I really enjoyed the work
Wow. What a crazy couple of months. I am glad to be back from the chaos that is sorrento, victoria, working in hospitality, during the holiday period. So much has happened and at the moment it is still such a blur but I wanted to say check out the Linden postcard show in St kilda. The show opens next week and is a lot of fun. http://www.lindenarts.org

'Diary' 09
Mixed Media and Biro on Canvas

I am really enjoying making this work at the moment. I am working with collage using found and created images that i think somehow show a snapshot of me. I try not to think to much about the images i use as I think some sort of spontaneity is required to accurately show a picture of what is happening around me at the time. The images are layered to hopefully give a sense of how small things can come together to make something big or, in this case, something new. I am also looking at human cycles in this work e.g. days, weeks and months or the ultimate cycle, a lifetime.

Here is a small sample of the work in the chapman and bailey 'belle arti' prize, currently showing. It is well worth a look. The canvases are 36 x 36 and they are in any medium.
